NRI Investment FAQs

Common questions about NRI mutual fund investments in India

Can NRIs invest in all mutual funds available in India? +

Yes, NRIs can invest in almost all mutual fund schemes available to resident Indians, subject to the fund's specific terms and conditions. However, some specialized schemes may have restrictions.

What is the difference between NRE and NRO accounts for investments? +

NRE (Non-Resident External) accounts hold foreign income that is fully repatriable. NRO (Non-Resident Ordinary) accounts hold Indian income with limited repatriability. Mutual fund investments can be made from both, but redemption proceeds are repatriable from NRE investments.

Are there any tax implications for NRI mutual fund investors? +

Yes, capital gains from mutual funds are taxable for NRIs. Short-term capital gains (equity funds held less than 12 months) are taxed at 15%, while long-term gains (over 12 months) over ₹1 lakh are taxed at 10%. For debt funds, short-term gains are taxed as per income tax slab, and long-term gains (over 36 months) are taxed at 20% with indexation benefits.

What is the process for repatriating mutual fund investments? +

Repatriation is straightforward for investments made through NRE accounts or PIS (Portfolio Investment Scheme). The redemption amount is credited to your NRE account, from where it can be transferred overseas. For NRO investments, there's a limit of $1 million per financial year for repatriation after paying applicable taxes.

Do NRIs need a PIS (Portfolio Investment Scheme) account? +

PIS account is required only if you wish to invest in Indian stocks directly. For mutual fund investments through the Sanchay Karo app, PIS account is not mandatory. You can invest directly using your NRE/NRO account.
